Title:

RIOT-based power meter reader

Koen is actively contributing to RIOT since 2017, in various aspects of the OS including tooling, bus-level networking support, low-power wireless networking and firmware updates over IPv6, CoAP. In real life, Koen is a PhD student with Inria working on security and sandboxing on RIOT.

Abstract:

Modern Dutch power meters have a ‘P1’ port, specifically made for reading out the power consumption by consumers with a device.

Commercial devices exist to provide consumers with insights in their power consumption. For half a year I’ve been running a custom reader based on RIOT and an ESP-32 setup, together with a server side daemon and a Grafana dashboard.

In this talk I will give an introduction into the Dutch Smart Meter Requirements, describe the hardware and software attached to the meter and show the server side component with database and dashboard.
