Title:

OpenSensSystem: Using RIOT for a Universal Sensor System for District Heating

Biography:

Marius Trappe is a TU Dresden Masters student by day, and a maker by night. Starting with Arduino, he worked with several microcontrollers and their IDEs for a variety of projects.
Since 2023, he is part of a three-person team at TU Dresden that focuses on sensor technology in the field of
Building Energy Systems.

Abstract:

We’re building a universal sensor system for district heating. And because it’s universal, there is not a single microcontroller that does it all.  We ended up using RIOT and, if you’re curious about what works and what doesn’t, this talk is for you. Join us on our journey developing the OpenSensSystem!

This talk provides feedback to the RIOT developers from the perspective of people prototyping and building a real product with RIOT. We’ll focus on low-power devices, support for different microcontrollers, drivers, LoRaWAN (the biggest challenge we encountered with RIOT), and other obstacles we stumbled upon.
